Great hike for kids not much elevation change. Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Park, near Mineral King in California's Southwestern Sierra, Beautiful Monarch Lakes lie cradled in scenic bowl at the foot of Sawtooth and Mineral Peaks. So bring the backpack or the skis and come make the trek around Monarch Lake. Very easy access to an absolutely beautiful lake with tons of trails to explore. we took the north/east side. Monarch Canyon as seen from the outlet of Monarch Lake A use trail leads left past the first campsite to another campsite with a bear box. Camping is only permitted in designated campgrounds at Monarch Lake. But it was all cleared when we did this hike on 10/10/20. Kayaking and canoeing are popular at Monarch lake as the water is relatively calm, the shore well-wooded and wildlife often seen. Horses, bicycles, snowmobiles and other motorized vehicles are prohibited. It is always advisable to have a trail map of the area with you. Unfortunately, the gold and copper deposits never materialized, the trees fit for logging were soon cut, and the final remaining big business in town - a box company - burned. The question of the day by many people was “are we going the right way?” As the trail moves far off the lake. The trail is open year round and a favorite with cross-country skiers and snowshoe hikers. Great hike. All Rights Reserved. The views of the mountains and rivers are breath taking especially early in the season around late May, with moose and other wildlife sightings in the area. One trip and you'll be hooked. One of the prettiest hikes on Colorado's west slope is the trail around Monarch Lake. The first part of the trail, which climbs steeply up dry exposed, sagebrush covered slopes, can be a real scorcher during the height of the summer. Close-by and easy to find. Downed trees had closed this trail halfway around the lake. Spring: Late season ski touring and snowshoeing, sightseeing, bird watching, nature walks at low elevations and in the western part of the park. Still a nice hike to that point. The reason is the hiking trails; not only is the trail around the lake relatively flat and picturesque, other major trails branch off from here to lead to some of Colorado's favorite hiking locations. The western part of the circular trail around Monarch Lake is a part of the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail that winds from Canada to Mexico. Beautiful treed sections, lake and river views. Interesting to see all the downed trees and the devastation from the wind storm.
